MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Freshman Sacha Byous-McConnell posted a career-high 13 kills, but it was not enough as Memphis dropped the first set and rallied to knock off the Marshall University volleyball team, 3-1 (34-32, 13-25, 21-25, 20-25) on Friday night in Conference USA action.
MU (8-7, 2-1 C-USA) received a 17-kill performance from senior Elizabeth Herman, while Byous-McConnell posted a .385 hitting clip in the Herd's first C-USA loss of the season.
Setter Elizabeth Fleming recorded 43 assists and seven digs, while Katy Schad and Dorothy Rahal tallied 15 and 14 digs, respectively.
Marija Jovanovic and Altrese Hawkins connected for 24 and 20 kills each as Memphis improves to 10-5 overall and 1-2 in league play.
The Herd outlasted the Tigers in the opening set that featured 20 ties, 34-32. MU trailed, 32-31 before Byous-McConnell connected for a spike to even the score. The visiting squad held served for the next two points as Abby Tomas put away two balls to win the back-and-forth battle in set one.
In the frame, Herman was an offensive all-star posting 10 kills on 15 attacks with just two miscues for a .533 hitting clip. As a team the Herd was spot on offensively, posting a team hitting percentage of .417 (24K-4E-48TA).
The second set belonged to the Tigers, as they jumped out to an 11-3 lead forcing a MU timeout. Memphis held command of the rest of the frame, taking the set 25-13.
The momentum followed the Tigers in the third frame, as they held off a late MU charge, 25-21.
After dropping back-to-back frames, the Herd was unable to force a deciding game as MU fell, 25-20.
