HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The No. 53 Marshall University tennis team is set for weekend matches with No. 72 University of Minnesota on Friday and the University of Kentucky on Sunday, both at the Huntington Tennis Club.
Friday's match against the Golden Gophers is set for 4 p.m. and is Campus Kids Day with free pizza for youth students, along with signed posters, Marshall apparel, and a $25 gift certificate giveaway to the winner of a competition to be held during the 10 minute intermission between doubles and singles.
The Thundering Herd (2-0) plays its first ranked opponent of the season when it takes the court with Minnesota. The Gophers are one of six teams on Marshall's schedule ranked in the preseason Top 75.
MU is coming off a dominating first day of competition as the Herd blanked Morehead State 7-0, and then defeated Eastern Michigan 6-1 last Friday in Huntington. Marshall went 11-1 in singles matches and swept all doubles in both contests, en route to a perfect 6-0 mark.
Friday's match will feature a pair of nationally-ranked players in No. 1 singles as No. 27 Michaela Kissell of Marshall will take on No. 51 Natalia Pintusava of Minnesota. First doubles also pairs two ranked teams as No. 63 Kissell/Dominika Zaprazna square off with No. 84 Ferrazzi/Palen.
The Herd then take on the Kentucky Wildcats Sunday afternoon with first serve scheduled for 12 p.m. MU defeated Kentucky last season in Lexington when the Wildcats were ranked No. 31, giving the Herd a victory over its then highest ranked team in program history. Marshall then defeated No. 27 SMU in the C-USA tournament, which is now the highest ranked school the Herd has ever defeated.
Both matches will be played at the Huntington Tennis Club located off I-64 at the Huntington Mall in Barboursville. The HTC is on the left hand side of Wal-Mart.
