HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Bears of Shawnee State University will arrive at Sam Hood Field on Wednesday afternoon for a 7:00 p.m. showdown with the Thundering Herd men's soccer team. The match will be Marshall's final non-conference home game of the 2011 season.
To date, the Herd is 3-4 in overall non-conference play and 2-1 at home. The team is 3-0-1 in Conference USA following Saturday's 1-1 draw with SMU, and holds a 6-4-1 overall record for the season. Tom Jackson is still top of the charts for the Herd when it comes to scoring, holding a team-leading eight goals on the year. Anthony Virgara - scorer of the lone goal in the SMU tie - is second on the team with three.
In the back, senior captain Jordan Hilgefort and goalkeeper Daniel Withrow continue to lead a defense that has the lowest goals against average in C-USA and has allowed the fewest goals of any team in the conference all season. The team has posted four shutouts on the year, and has held clean sheets in two of the team's three previous wins over non-conference teams.
For the opposing Bears, Chad Johnston leads the team in goals, with seven, and in assists, with six. Shawnee State is a member of the NAIA, and enters Wednesday's contest with a 6-5-1 overall record. The Bears are yet to play an NCAA Division I opponent this season, but did fall to the NAIA's No.2 ranked, Lindsay Wilson 1-0 in overtime last Saturday.
Wednesday night's match also marks the annual Breast Cancer Awareness game in which Cabell Huntington Hospital and St. Mary's Medical Center will help to spread awareness by giving away pink Crocs in honor of all breast cancer survivors. Fans are encouraged to come out and participate in the promotional events and watch as the Herd tries to remain undefeated for the eighth straight game. The gates will open at 6:00, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
