The Herd will start with Virginia, Friday (9/9) at 5:00 p.m. and continue on Saturday (9/10) against Ohio at 1:00 p.m. and Louisville at 7:30 p.m.
Marshall will enter the tournament with momentum after knocking off Stetson this past weekend to earn their first win of the season. Cameron Yoho's performance in the IUPUI tournament gave the senior middle-blocker an All-Tournament selection after she finished tied for first on the team in kills with 27 and led in digs with 32. She also led the team with a 3.00 kills per set average and finished the weekend with five blocks.
The Herd's first opponent, Ohio, has a 3-3 record for the 2011 season. They have competed in two tournaments and knocked off competition including, Virginia Tech, Maryland and Villanova and was narrowly edged out by No. 24 ranked Tennessee in a 3-2 battle. Ohio's Kelly Lamberti leads the charge for the Bobcats with 76 kills, while her teammate Katie Post has recorded 47 blocks on the year already.
Marshall will face Virginia in the first match on Saturday. The Cavaliers enter the tournament with a 4-2 record after competing in the Marriott Cavalier Classic and the Holiday Inn Classic Cup. Their wins came against East Carolina, USC Upstate, Long Island, and Western Carolina. Virginia's Simone Asque leads the team with 69 kills, while Jessica O'Shoney and Tori Janowski share second place with 51 kills each. Their setter, Beth Wildermuth, has started the year with 175 assists.
The Herd will finish the tournament with Louisville on Saturday afternoon. Louisville finished the 2010 season ranked No. 25 in the RPI polls and returns a strong team that was picked in the pre-season polls to finish first in the Big East. The 5-2 squad swept the Crown Plaza Cardinia Tournament and has knocked off opposition including, Kansas State, Ole Miss and Eastern Illinois. The Cardinals are led by last week's Big East Player of the Week, Lola Arslanbekova who has racked up 104 kills on the season.
"We have three teams that are all top-60 RPI ranks from last year," commented Coach Jacobs on the upcoming tournament. "We were hoping this would be a good barometer for us. When we scheduled it we thought about going towards conference, knowing how high of a level we might be able to play."
Jacobs continued about the high-level of competition, "It was no bargain going in, but this is what it's about. I would rather go in and have to compete to win, rather than go into a match and not have to compete."
