HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - After starting the season with one of the best records in over two decades, Marshall women's basketball looks to continue their early achievements with a contest against SMU on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET in the Cam Henderson Center.
Marshall (12-3, 3-0 C-USA) improved to a five win streak with a 55-44 victory over Southern Miss on Wednesday night. The game displayed the lowest combined score of the year, due in part to a stout Herd defense that limited the Golden Eagles to only 19 points in the second half.
Lateidra Elliott recorded a team-high 13 points during the game and added two assists. The senior guard has led the Herd in points for the past three games in row and leads Conference USA in three-point percentage after making 17-of-35 to mark a 48.6 percent average. As a team, Marshall is the number one team in conference play for three-point percentage, averaging 35.1 percent for the season from behind the arc.
The Herd will look to use a solid presence on the board to out-perform the Mustangs. Marshall, who averages 43.9 rebounds per game is going up against a SMU team who is last in C-USA in rebounds per game.
Erica Woods currently leads the effort on the glass, grabbing 95 boards for the year and averaging 6.8 per game. Woods is also third on the team in scoring, averaging 7.6 points per game. The sophomore forward is second in the conference in free throw percentage with an 80.0 percent average from the line.
SMU enters Sunday's match-up 8-8 (1-2 C-USA). The Mustangs earned their first conference win over Houston this past Thursday. The team averages 61.2 points per game and is shooting 38.3 percent in the field this season. Alisha Filmore leads the Mustangs with 10.9 points per game and also records a team-high 44 assists. Akil Simpson and Christine Elliott each have over 100 rebounds for the year, while Elliott leads the team with 11 blocks.
