YORKTOWN, Ind. - On a cool and windy day, Marshall women's golf was able to put together a strong first round as it sits in second after action on Saturday at the Cardinal Classic.

Despite winds in excess of 20 mph at times, the Thundering Herd shot as a team 310 (+22) and stands one stroke behind the tournament host, Ball State 309 (+21).

"I was proud of my team for keeping it together through the conditions as well as they did," head coach Meredith Knight Rowsey said.

Korakot Simsiriwong's day one performance is a big reason why Marshall found success. The sophomore was the only player in the field on Saturday to shot even par as her round of 72 puts her in first by three strokes over Jenna Hague of Ball State.

"For Korakot to finish the way she did in the conditions is fantastic and she deserves to be in the lead," Knight Rowsey said after Saturday's action.

Junior Rachel Thompson also had a good day on The Players Club course in Yorktown, Ind. She finished with a 78 (+6) and sits in a tie for eighth

Senior Maria Battaglia, making her first performance of the fall, shot a 79 (+7) and is in a tie for 15th.

Rounding out the team scores for the Herd were seniors Samantha DiDomenico and Caitlyn Morrone. DiDomenico put together a round of 81 (+9) and is in a tie for 25th. Morrone had a round of 84 (+12) and finds herself in a tie for 38th.

Kristyn Morrone, playing as an individual, had a round of 88 (+16) to wrap up Marshall's golfers.

The final round of action begins Sunday at 9 a.m. from The Players Club. Stay tuned to HerdZone.com for an update on the Herd's performance.
