Feb. 15, 2013

DURHAM, N.C. -- Marshall right-handed pitcher Aaron Blair has been named to USA Baseball's preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List for the 2013 season.

The release of the watch list marks USA Baseball's first step toward identifying the top player in college baseball.

Blair was named a Perfect Game Collegiate All-American last August after dominating the Cape Cod League over the summer. Blair went 6-0 with a league-leading 1.17 earned run average in his first season with the CCL. He collected six winning decisions in six starts (eight appearances) during the regular season before adding two more wins in postseason action. Blair also lowered his earned run average during the playoffs, giving up only one earned run over 12.0 innings (0.75 ERA).

Last season at Marshall, Blair made 14 starts and led the Thundering Herd with a 3.98 ERA, striking out 82 batters and walking just 28 over 83.2 innings pitched. He is scheduled to make his first start of the 2013 campaign on Saturday against future Conference USA rival Old Dominion.

Sponsored by Major League Baseball, the Golden Spikes Award will be presented in 2013 for the 36th time. The Watch List features 50 of the nation's top amateur talents, and it will be a "rolling" list to ensure that athletes can play themselves into consideration for the Golden Spikes Award, to be presented on Friday, July 19.

Following the release of a second, 60-player Watch List on Thursday, May 2, USA Baseball officials will announce the 30 semifinalists for the 2013 Golden Spikes Award on Tuesday, May 28. The list of 30 will then be sent to a voting body consisting of past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of the media that closely follow the amateur game, select professional baseball personnel and current USA Baseball staff, representing a group of more than 200 voters in total.

Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2013. Tuesday, May 28 marks the day when college baseball fans from across the country will be able to vote for their favorite semifinalist on As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of 30 names. On Tuesday, June 4 USA Baseball will announce the three finalists, and voting will once again commence that same day.
