HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Just two days after concluding the Qdoba Invitational and recording its first win of the season, the Marshall men's soccer team (1-4-1) will host VMI on Tuesday on Hoops Family Field at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
LAST TIME OUT
By defeating IPFW, 1-0, in the final game of the Qdoba Invitational (Sept. 15), the Thundering Herd collected its first win of the 2013 season and the first win at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex in program history. The game was only the second the men have played at 'the Vet' since its grand opening (Aug. 23).
The Marshall victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Herd that began with a 2-0 loss at Davidson (Sept. 1). Three of those defeats during the streak came on the road.
INTO THE FIRE
Six Marshall freshmen have combined for 17 starts for the Herd. Ben Holt (Knoxville, Tenn.) leads the group of freshmen with five starts. The other five include James Campbell (Greenville, S.C.) who has two starts, Mukor Harris (Boyds, Md.) who has one, Daniel Jodah (Mississauga, Ontario) with two, Eric Lavery (Harrisburg, Pa.) with four and Juan Ortiz (Rockville, Md.), who has three starts.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Through games of Sept. 15, Marshall ranks first in Conference USA in saves with 28. Marshall goalkeeper Danny Sellitti (Las Vegas) has recorded 17 saves in four games played for a saves per game average of 4.25 which has him second in C-USA in saves. Sellitti has tended the Marshall goal for 383 of the 559 minutes the Herd has played through six games. Heading into the weekend, Marshall ranked 16th among NCAA Division I men's soccer programs in saves per game with 6.25.
SCOUTING THE KEYDETS
VMI travels to Huntington in search of its first win of the year (0-4-1). In the Big South Conference Preseason Poll, the Keydets were selected to finish 11th (last place), as voted by league coaches.
Through five games, VMI has been outscored (17-4) and outshot (98-29) by hefty margins. Leading the way for the VMI offense is freshman midfielder Wes Saupe, who has scored one goal and notched one assist (three points).
Marshall and VMI have met 30 times, with the Herd leading the series 16-10-4. The two sides first met during the 1979 season - they were once Southern Conference members -- and most recently met in 2012 in Lexington, Va., where the Herd won 7-0. The Keydets have taken on the Herd 13 times in the series history in Huntington, with Marshall posting a 9-1-3 record in those games.
