HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -
The Marshall women's basketball team is preparing to host the NJIT Highlanders in the Cam Henderson Center Sunday, Nov. 22. It is the third game of a five game home stand for the Herd.

Marshall (3-0) is coming off of a 72-62 win against Rhode Island. The Highlanders (0-2) are coming off of a 75-47 loss to Lehigh.

The Sunday afternoon contest is a "GreenOut" as Marshall Foam Fingers will be given away.

HAVE YOU HERD?

Freshman Shayna Gore was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week Nov. 16. In just her first two collegiate contests Gore lit up the scoreboard with 40 total points while shooting 71.4 percent from the floor and also hitting 50 percent of her three's. Gore added 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals.

POINTS ALL AROUND

In the first two games, Marshall scored over 90 points in back-to-back games for the first time since 1989. It was also only the fifth time in school history that has happened. All times of 90 points or more in consecutive games:

  • 1983: Nov. 25, 102-53 W over WV State & Nov. 26, 92-68 W over WVU Tech
  • 1984: Nov. 26, 126-62 W over WVU Tech & Nov. 28, 98-81 W over Charleston (WV)

SCORING BY QUARTER

With the new rule changes to quarters instead of halves, Marshall has shown it can light the scoreboard throughout the whole game averaging over 20 points per quarter.

LOCAL FLAVOR

Seven players on the roster this year for the Herd are from West Virginia. Redshirt junior Talequia Hamilton, junior Kiana Evans and freshman Madison Morris are from right here in Huntington. They are joined by junior McKenzie Akers (Princeton), redshirt sophomore Taylor Porter (Fort Gay) and freshmen Shayna Gore (Logan) and Hope Lester (Hanover). Add in freshman Logan Fraley from Ashland, Ky. and the Herd has eight members from the immediate surrounding area.

Highlights of Marshall's 2014-15 schedule include:

  • Five teams that advanced to postseason play in 2015.

RECORD BOOK WATCH

The Herd has a few players who are approaching career milestones and rising up the ranks of the program record book.

Senior Leah Scott has scored 56 points this season giving her has 889 career points. 111 points away from becoming the 18th player in team history to score 1,000 career points.

Senior Norrisha Victrum can be found in a few places in the record book. Victrum has 284 assists and needs 3 to pass Herd legend Sikeetha Shepard-Hall for 8th all-time. Victrum also currently ranks 9th in 3-point field goals made (92) and 9th in 3-point field goals attempted (288). Victrum needs 259 points to reach 1,000 for her career.

Junior Chelsey Romero had a block party against Brescia recording 4 more to pass Lisa Prunner (1980-84) for 6th place all-time with 89. Romero needs 11 more blocks to become the 5th player in program history with 100 career blocks.

TOURNAMENT PLAY

Marshall made it to the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) at the end of the 2014-15 season. It was the Herd's first appearance in postseason play since going to the NCAA Tournament in 1997 after winning the Southern Conference Championship. Marshall won its first ever postseason game when it defeated Northern Kentucky 81-79 (3/19/15) in the first round of the WBI. Marshall lost a close one in the second round 73-71 at Mercer (3/22/15).

SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS

NJIT enters the game 0-2 after dropping a close game (54-50) to Binghamton and then losing 75-47 to Lehigh. The Highlanders have only one senior in Ronni Grandison (7.0ppg & 3.5rpg). There are five juniors on the roster who have all been major contributors including the Dudley Twins. Olivia leads the team with 8.5 ppg and Alana leads with 3.0 apg. 6-foot-5 sophomore Center Maria Ruban leads the Highlanders with 8.0 rebounds per game.

The last time these two teams met was Jan. 5, 2014 in Newark, N.J. Marshall escaped with a 1-point win 57-56. For the Herd, Leah Scott (11 pts), Norrisha Victrum (6 pts) and Chelsey Romero (8 pts, 6 rbs & 2 blks) all played. For the Highlanders Alana Dudley (7 pts), Ruta Vetra (4 rbs) & Camerin Spahn (3 rbs) played.
