CHARLESTON, S.C. - Marshall tennis finished the opening day of the College of Charleston Classic on Friday, earning a total of four match wins, three from singles and one from doubles.
Competing for the Herd on Friday was Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia), Jackie Carr (Rogers, Ark.), Anne Gulsrud (Stavanger, Norway), Rachael Morales (Columbus, Ohio), Maddie Silver (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany).
The Herd struggled in doubles action, as the team of Morales/Silver was the only duo to come away with a win, defeating the host College of Charleston 8-4.
Marshall was able to bounce back by going 3-3 in singles action. Earning singles wins for Marshall were Derya Turhan, Rachael Morales and Anne Gulsrud. All three match wins for the Herd were over the Winthrop Eagles. Turhan defeated Garcia in straight sets 7-5, 6-0. Morales cruised to a 6-2 6-3 win over Uzelac. Gulsrud had a much more difficult challenge, defeating Aguado in three sets 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4.
"We looked better up and down the lineup," Herd coach John Mercer said. "It was good to see Derya, Annie and Rachael pick up solid singles win today."
Bogicevic, Carr and Silver all lost their opening day singles matches against Winthrop.
