HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -
The Marshall women's basketball team look for its eighth win of the season Sunday in the Cam against Norfolk State. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.

This will be the third ever meeting between Marshall (7-1) and Norfolk State (0-8). The Herd is coming off of an 81-73 win over Saint Francis in which it needed a big fourth quarter to avoid its first home non-conference loss since Dec. 29, 2013. Marshall has a string of 11-consecutive home wins versus non-conference opponents.

Sunday's game against the Spartans is also "Holiday Ugly Sweater Party". There will be a contest and prizes for the fan with the best ugly sweater.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

Norfolk State (0-8) is coming off of a 67-47 loss to William & Mary. The Spartans are searching for its first win but have played some very tough competition in USC Upstate (L, 82-62), Virginia (L, 86-50), Loyola Maryland (L, 75-67), Oakland (L, 83-73), Mississippi State (L, 92-34), Morgan State (L, 67-58), UNC Wilmington (L, 61-57) and William & Mary (L, 67-47). Norfolk State is led by redshirt senior forward Siobhan Beslow, a transfer from La Salle University, with 10.5ppg. Beslow has finished in double digits five times this season and is averaging 9.3rpg. Junior guard Koryn Lawrence is tied for the team lead with 10.5ppg and is leading the team in assists with 3.5 per game. Leading the Spartans in rebounds is 6-foot-1 sophomore forward Kayla Roberts with 9.4 per game. Roberts has three double-doubles this season and has finished with at least 11 rebounds four times this season.

This is the third ever meeting between Norfolk State and Marshall. This first meeting was Dec. 19, 2000, an 83-61 Herd win in the Cam. The previous matchup came just this past season Dec. 16 at Norfolk State. Marshall trailed 32-26 going into the half but came out firing in the second half, outscoring Norfolk State 47-39 to grab the two-point victory. A.J. Johnson scored 16 of her 19 points, including hitting five 3-pointers, in the second half helping lead Marshall to the win.

RECORD BOOK WATCH

The Herd has a few players who are approaching career milestones and rising up the ranks of the program record book.

Senior Leah Scott has scored 140 points this season for a career total of 973. She is 27 points shy of becoming the 19th player in team history to score 1,000. She also ranks 11th all-time with 235 free-throws made and needs 5 more to be in the top 10.

Senior Norrisha Victrum can be found in a few places in the record book. Victrum has 297 assists and needs 3 to pass Kristi Huff (1988-92) for 6th all-time. Victrum also currently ranks 9th in 3-point field goals made (94) and 9th in 3-point field goals attempted (299). Victrum needs 243 points to become the 20th player to reach 1,000 for her career.

Junior Chelsey Romero has 14 blocks this season to give her a career total of 98. Romero is in 5th place all-time and needs 2 more blocks to become the 5th player in program history with 100 in a career.

Marshall is on an 11-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents. The last loss was Dec. 29, 2013 against Navy, 72-68. Wins are:

Marshall was held to its lowest point output in a quarter with 10 in the first against Alabama A&M, but the Herd has yet to be held to single digits in a quarter this season. The Herd has put up 20 or more points in a quarter 13 times out of 32 total played. Defensively, the Herd has allowed 20 or more points in a quarter seven times with four against Morehead State and held opponents to single digits six times.

Marshall is ranked in the top 5 in Conference USA in 17 of 21 statistical categories including ranked 1st overall in 6.

1st: Scoring Offense (78.2), Scoring Margin (+17.8), Rebounding Offense (44.5), Assists per game (17.1), Assist-Turnover Ratio (1.2) and Defensive Rebounding per game (31.3).

Marshall also has several players ranking in the top 20 in C-USA in several statistical categories.
