HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Junior guard Stevie Browning (Logan, W.Va.) matched career-highs of 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists for Marshall men's basketball (0-5) in a 75-65 loss to Akron (6-2) on Friday night at Cam Henderson Center.

Senior forward James Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich.) joined Browning with a team-high 18 points and added seven rebounds. Junior forward Ryan Taylor (Indianapolis) rounded out double-figure scoring for the Herd with 17 points, and had seven rebounds.


For the Zips, senior center Pat Forsythe had team highs of 20 points and eight rebounds and shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the field in 27 minutes.


Marshall kept it close in the first half, holding a slim lead until a 6-6 tie at 15:45. A 7-0 run gave the Zips a 13-6 advantage at 12:53. The Herd responded with a 6-0 run to close the gap to one point. Marshall kept it within five points until another 6-0 run put the Zips seven points ahead to tie their largest lead of the half, up 22-15. Kelly and Taylor each had nine points in the first period to lead Marshall, which trailed by six at the half, 28-22.


The score tied twice in the second half, at 16:36 (34-34) and at 10:47 (45-45). From that point, the Zips began to pull away, going on a 9-0 run from 10:47 to 7:38 to reach a 54-45 lead, and eventually had a 10-point advantage with 5:29 left to play (59-49). The Herd came as close as eight points with under a minute remaining, but could not pull off a comeback and fell, 75-65, to the MAC East favorites.


Akron had the advantage on the boards, 49-33, and out-shot the Herd, 41.5 percent (27-of-65) to 40.0 percent (24-of-60). Marshall converted 19 Zips turnovers into 21 points.
