HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall softball team (17-8, 3-3) exploded for a school record 18 runs and recorded 17 hits against the Ohio Bobcats in a nonconference game at Dot Hicks Field Thursday. Marshall hit for two grand slams and three total home runs against the Bobcats.

18 runs by the Herd is the most in program history for a single contest, surpassing 17, which was set on three occasions, most recently against Northern Kentucky on April 9, 2014.

Marshall hit the ball tremendously all game, with each starter getting at least one hit. In the bottom of the first, it was base running that got Marshall on the board, when freshman Elicia D'Orazio stole home from third base. Senior Emileigh Cooper would add to her recent success by driving in junior Shaelynn Braxton.

The Herd picked it up again in the second, when pinch-hitter Alyssa Woodrum hit her first homer of the year, a grand slam that scored Morgan Zerkle, Madi Marshall and Katalin Lucas.

Things got even better for Marshall in the third, with a nine run inning. Lucas started things off with a single to left center to score freshman Jordan Colliflower. Then, sophomore Morgan Zerkle doubled to left center, bringing Lucas around to score. It was then Shaelynn Braxton's turn to get a grand slam, knocking the ball to center and out, scoring Kaelynn Greene, Zerkle and Kylie Howard.

Marshall was still not done in the bottom of the third. After a pitching change, Lucas went yard as well, scoring Raquel Escareno and Cooper to close out the inning.

Marshall would add three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. A Zerkle double to right scored Howard and a Shaelynn Braxton double to right field brought home Greene and Zerkle to wrap the game up at 18-3.

Sophomore Jordan Dixon improved to 16-8 in the circle for Marshall, after striking out six batters in only 16 faced. Junior Brittanie Fowler finished the final inning for Marshall, allowing no runs and notching two strikeouts.
