MIAMI - Marshall University's softball team (15-5, 2-0) opened its Conference USA season Saturday with two victories against the FIU Panthers in Miami. Marshall won the first game 13-5 and the second 13-3. The first win of the evening was the 100th win in Conference USA for the Thundering Herd.

Marshall got the opening runs of the game in the top of the second, when freshman Kylie Howard ripped a shot to left over the outstretched glove of the FIU left fielder, bringing home pinch runners Jordan Colliflower and Madi Marshall, as well as right fielder Emileigh Cooper.

Howard was then brought home after a single by sophomore Morgan Zerkle, who singled past the shortstop to make the score 4-0.

Marshall junior Raquel Escareno got her first home run of the season in the top of the third, with a three-run shot to center field that scored Taylor McCord and Shaelynn Braxton to make the score 7-0.

In the fourth, freshman Elicia D'Orazio was able to score on the throw after Zerkle stole second. Zerkle then scored after a single by Kaelynn Greene. Greene was credited with an RBI on the play, but was caught in a rundown trying to advance to second.

With Marshall up 9-0, conditions started to worsen as rain started to fall at Felsberg Field. FIU scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 9-4.

In the top of the fifth, the game went into a three hour and 20 minute rain delay. After the game resumed, Howard continued her successful evening with an RBI that brought home Escareno. Next, an Elicia D'Orazio sacrifice bunt that scored Cooper. Zerkle finished the day with a two-run home run deep to center field. The game would finish at 13-5.

Sophomore Jordan Dixon got the win for Marshall, improving to 13-5 in 2015.

Marshall scored first again, this time in the first inning after a Braxton hit a sacrifice fly to score Zerkle, who had singled and stole second previously.

FIU scored two runs in the bottom of the inning, but Marshall was able to regain the lead in the top of the fourth, when Shaelynn Braxton hit a home run to center that tied the game at three. With the bomb, Braxton moved into sixth all-time in school history, with 24. Pinch-hitter Alyssa Woodrum then ripped a two-RBI single to left, scoring Cooper and Colliflower.

Escareno would drive home another runner in the top of the fifth and Lucas would follow, scoring Escareno to make the score 6-3 Herd.

In the top of the seventh, the Herd would explode for seven runs, starting with Lucas scoring Greene and ending with Zerkle scoring Howard and D'Orazio.
