@Herd_Tennis Suffers Defeat at ITA Kick-Off Weekend

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Marshall tennis suffered a 4-0 setback on Friday in the first day of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

The Herd and Golden Hurricane met in singles and doubles action on Friday. The match was the Herd's first dual match of 2016.

"I thought we played well in singles at times, but obviously need to be more consistent for longer periods of time if we are going to be successful at this level," Herd coach John Mercer said. "We'll try it again tomorrow and see if we can keep getting better."

In doubles play, juniors Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Rachael Morales (Columbus, Ohio) battled the No. 1 team from Tulsa, Ksenia Laskutova and Renata Kuricova, but came up short, falling 6-2. A similar outcome would come on the second court, as Maddie Silver (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) fell, 6-2. The match for Anne Gulsrud (Stavanger, Norway) and Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) ended unfinished.

Once again, Turhan was slotted at the No. 1 spot in singles for the Herd and performed well. Despite her match ending unfinished, Turhan led Saana Saarteinen, 6-4, 1-2. Morales and Silver's match would both be unfinished results. Morales trailed Laskutova, 7-5, 3-2, while Silver fell behing 6-2, 5-3.

Facing a setback in singles on Friday was Pomyatinskaya, Bogicevic and Gulsrud. Pomyatinskaya fell 7-5, 1-0 to Yelena Nemchen after suffering an injury, while Bogicevic dropped 6-1, 6-3 to Marcelina Cichon. In the sixth flight, Kuricova defeated Gulsrud, 6-4, 6-1.

The Herd will be back in action on Saturday, as it play in the consolation match against either North Carolina or Yale at 6:30 p.m.
