Game Notes

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -
Marshall softball hits the road to begin the 2016 season at the Trojan Invite hosted by Troy University in Troy, Alabama. Marshall will play two games Sunday Feb. 14.


The Herd will matchup first with Alabama State at noon central time, 1 p.m. eastern. Immediately following the conclusion of game one, Marshall will take on the host team Troy.

Marshall will be playing an abbreviated schedule due to attending the funeral of former Herd player and teammate Emileigh Cooper, a 2015 graduate of Marshall, who passed away Friday Feb. 5.

Notes on The Herd

- Head Coach Shonda Stanton enters her 17th season leading the Herd with an overall record of 515-417-2 and 488-392-2 at Marshall.

- The Herd return a lineup that combined for 315 hits last season including junior outfielder Morgan Zerkle (89), senior outfielder Kaelynn Greene (70), sophomore infielder Elicia D'Orazio (57) and senior infielder Katalin Lucas (41).

- Four players were named Preseason All-Conference USA: senior outfielder Kaelynn Greene, junior outfielder Morgan Zerkle, junior pitcher Jordan Dixon and sophomore infielder Elicia D'Orazio. Zerkle, Greene and D'Orazio combined for 216 hits and 127 runs in 2015. Dixon was the first pitcher in the country in 2015 to reach 30 wins for the season.

- Zerkle was named to the 2016 Women's National Elite Team after participating in the USA Women's National Selection Camp in January.

- Zerkle was named to the USA/ASA Top 50 "Watch List" for collegiate player of the year and Graham Hays of ESPNW.com tabbed the junior from Milton, W.Va. as the number 25 most exciting player to watch this season.

- The Herd schedule includes games with four teams beginning the season ranked in the top 25. When Marshall travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the BAMA Bash Feb. 26-28, MUSB will face three of those opponents in one weekend. Five games scheduled against Alabama (#5), Tennessee (#8) and Arizona (#13). March 16 the Herd will host Kentucky (#18) at Dot Hicks Field for a single game.

- Marshall's 2016 schedule also features 10 more games against teams receiving preseason top 25 votes. One game vs. Hofstra (14 votes), and three-game series with C-USA opponents FAU (5 votes), UAB (4 votes) and WKU (4 votes).
