HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall women's soccer coach Kevin Long has announced the addition of freshman Gabby Powers (Knoxville, Tenn.) for the 2016 spring season.
Powers, a 5-foot-7 midfielder/forward, graduated with a 3.5 GPA one semester early from Hardin Valley Academy to join the Thundering Herd. She signed and enrolled at Marshall University in January and will major in nursing.
Marshall will host four matches at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex this spring: April 3, 6, 9 and 17. Scheduling information can be found on HerdZone.com.
"Gabby is a strong player with good pace," Long said. "We have seen her play a bunch and we believe she will be effective as either a midfielder for us or a forward. She brings a great work rate and an urgency in her play that will translate in an easy transition for her to the college field."
As a senior, Powers had 12 goals and four assists as Hardin Valley won District 4-AAA and Region 2-AAA championships on its way to the Class AAA state quarterfinals before losing to Clarksville, 1-0. She is a three-time first team all-KIL (Knoxville), all-district, all-region and all-state selection. PrepXtra, the Knoxville News Sentinel's high school sports outlet, named her Midfielder of the Year twice. She led Hardin Valley to two district and regional championships while recording 61 goals and 29 assists during her high school career.
"The fact that she is coming to us in January allows us to work on that transition period so that by the fall she is flying," Long said. "She is a great person, very competitive on the field and I am thrilled to be working with her this spring."
Powers joins fellow Knoxville native Ashley Seltzer, a rising sophomore forward for the Herd, who was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team in the fall. Seltzer is an alumna of Bearden High School.
