BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Marshall volleyball team fell at No. 26 WKU Friday night, 3-1 (17-25, 18-25, 25-22, 16-25). The Herd's next match is Sunday, Oct. 29 at 12 p.m., at Florida Atlantic.
Sophomore Jac'cara Walker led the Herd with eight kills. Seniors Justice Craft and Taylor Pelton added seven and six, respectively. Sophomore Madelyn Cole had 29 assists and four blocks.
"Our effort tonight was fantastic and so was the level of enthusiasm," Herd coach Mitch Jacobs said. "We are a team trending in the right direction with five tough obstacles in front of us if we want to get to the C-USA tournament. Western is a team that just knows how to win and we battled for most of the night."
Marshall kept it close through the first set until the Hilltoppers pulled away, scoring five of the last six points. In the second set, the Herd stayed close again until the home team pulled away again toward the end of the set.
Trailing 2-1, Marshall came out firing in the third set. The Herd jumped out to 6-1 lead on a kill by Walker. WKU battled back to tie the set at 11-11, but then Marshall used a 3-0 run to take back the lead. The Hilltoppers pulled within two but the Herd closed it out to take the third set.
WKU held the lead throughout the fourth and final set. Marshall kept it close, getting within three at 14-11.
Marshall is now 9-15 and 4-5 in Conference USA. WKU improved to 24-2 and a perfect 10-0 in conference action.
The Herd has five more Conference USA matches to close out the season. Marshall's remaining opponents are at Florida Atlantic (Oct. 29), North Texas (Nov. 3), Charlotte (Nov. 5), at UTEP (Nov. 8) and UAB (Nov. 11).
