HARRISONBURG, Va.-The Marshall University track and field team took home four individual victories on Saturday at the William Walton Invitational. The team finished second as a team with a total of 108 points at the meet hosted by James Madison University.
Freshman Christianna Dogan recorded the first win of the day for the Thundering Herd in the 400 meter hurdles. She won with a new best personal time of the year at 1:02.46. That time is currently the 12th best in Conference USA.
Sophomore Heidi Heiniger won the javelin throw for the second time this season, as she threw a mark of 136 feet, 11 inches (41.73 meters). Freshman Torie Derrow finished third in the event with a throw of 123 feet, 1 inch (37.51 meters).
Sophomore Elena Marchand picked up her first win of the outdoor season in the shot put. Her mark of 46 feet, 2.50 inches (14.08 meters) won the event by nearly a foot.
Sophomore Maleah Penn was the final Herd athlete of the day to take an individual victory, as she won the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 1 inch (1.55 meters).
In the 100 meter hurdles, the Herd placed five runners in the top-10. Freshman Safiyyah Mitchell led the way in second with her Conference USA sixth best time of 13.93. Sophomore Sarah Bever came in third with a time of 14.24.
Freshmen Hannah Carreon (14.42) and Torie Derrow (14.43) finished back-to-back in sixth and seventh. Freshman Christianna Dogan finished 10th with a time of 16.45.
In the 400m dash, junior Breanna Hargrove finished third with a time of 57.04. Fellow junior Naja Greer finished fourth with a time of 58.53.
In the 100m dash, the Herd placed four runners in the top-11. Senior Hope Julmiste finished fifth (12.02), junior Kayla Haywood finished sixth (12.12), junior Andrea Chidester finished eighth (12.16), and freshman Danere'a White finished 11th (12.45).
In the 200m dash, Marshall put three runners in the top-10. Junior Andrea Chidester led the way in seventh with a time of 24.98. Freshmen Danere'a White (25.14) and Hannah Carreon (25.20) finished ninth and tenth, respectively.
In the 1500m run, senior Andrea Porter finished fourth with a time of 4:47.08. Sophomore Taylor Craigo finished right behind in fifth with a time of 4:47.08. Junior Madeline Armstrong finished 10th with a time of 4:48.52, and fellow junior Samantha Graffius finished 11th with a time of 5:04.41.
In the 5000m run, Porter then finished second with a time of 18:04.67. Graduate senior finished fourth with a time of 18:59.00. Graffius finished fifth with a time of 19:47.47. Freshman Abigail Short finished sixth with a time of 20:07.98.
In the 3000m run, junior Jane Jensen finished fourth (11:11.81) and senior Amber Govey finished fifth (11:24.32).
Sophomore Hasana Clark finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 171 ft., 3 in. (52.20m). Freshman Ericka Budd finished third with a throw of 161 ft., 10 in. (49.34m). Sophomore Whitney McAtee finished seventh with a throw of 136 ft., 10 in. (41.70m).
Following up behind Marchand in the shot put was Clark in fifth place (41 ft., 7 in.-12.67m). Budd finished in sixth (40 ft., 4.25 in.-12.30m) and McAtee in seventh (40 ft., 0.50 in.-12.20m).
Freshman Denisha West finished third in the triple jump with a jump of 36 ft., 3.50 in. (11.06m).
In the long jump, sophomore Sarah Bever finished ninth with a jump of 15 ft., 4.75 in. (4.69m). Fellow sophomore Taylor Martin finished 10th with a jump of 13 ft., 10.25 in. (4.22m).
In the discus throw, Marchand finished third with a throw of 158 ft., 2 in. (48.22m). McAtee finished fourth (121 ft., 8 in.-37.08m) and Budd finished fifth (112 ft., 11 in.-34.41m).
The Herd returns to Virginia again next week for the two-day University of Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville. The meet begins on Friday, April 21.
