@Herd_Tennis Earns ITA Academic Awards

July 25, 2017

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Six members of the Marshall women's tennis team earned a spot on the ITA All-Academic team, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Thursday.

Recent graduates Rachael Morales and Anna Pomyatinskaya, seniors Maddie Silver and Stephanie Smith and sophomores Daniela Dankanych and Nikola Novackova each made the ITA All-Academic Team for posting a grade point average above 3.50 for the 2016-17 academic year.

"This is a great honor for each of our student athletes and Marshall University. As a team, we place a heavy emphasis on academics and take pride in being student-athletes. The hard work off the court has paid off for these six individuals in this honor," head coach John Mercer said.

This is the third time that Morales has been selected as an ITA All-American Scholar Athlete. She previously was selected in 2014 and 2015. Pomyatinskaya and Silver are both repeat award winners, having both been selected to the ITA All-Academic Team in 2016. Smith was selected to the 2015 ITA All-Academic Team while at Indiana. Dankanych and Novackova are first-time honorees.

In addition to the six All-Academic athletes, the Thundering Herd was named an ITA All-Academic team for posting a team grade point average above 3.20. It is the seventh consecutive year that the Herd earned the honor and the 11th time that the Herd has been named an All-Academic team under the direction of Mercer.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association releases academic awards prior to the start of each new season. The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2016 and spring 2017).

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria:
1.) be a varsity letter winner,
2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and
3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
