Herd Heads Back to North Carolina For Appalachian State Series

BOONE, N.C.--The Thundering Herd baseball team heads back to North Carolina this weekend for a three-game series against the Mountaineers of Appalachian State. It will be the start of a long week on the road for the team, which will play two separate doubleheaders over the coming week (Marshall travels to Western Carolina Tuesday). The Herd looks to improve on its 4-2 start on the road before Marshall's first stretch of home games begins next weekend. Game 1 will be Saturday at 1 p.m., Games 2 and 3 will be played in a doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Sunday vs. Appalachian State RHP Brad O'Connor (7.88 ERA 0-2) vs. Colin Schmid (3.27 ERA 1-0)

Sunday vs. Appalachian State RHP Will Ray (0.84 0-0) vs. Brandon Boone (10.38 ERA 0-1)


--Reynaldo Pastrana was recognized as one of C-USA's top performers after last weekend's series against Elon. Pastrana has had a monster start to the season, racking up a team-high 10 hits, nine RBIs and two homers, while maintaining a .370 batting average.

--Newcomer Peter Hutzal leads the team with a .438 batting average and an on-base percentage of .609. Hutzal has proven especially effective earning walks, with seven bases on balls in just 16 at bats.

--Freshman Geordon Blanton has proven deadly running the bases to start the 2018 campaign. The first year player has yet to be caught stealing in four attempts, which leads the Herd through six games.

--Gordon Cardenas has proved a worthy addition to Marshall's bullpen after transferring from Auburn. The relief pitcher has two wins in three appearances on the mound while allowing just two hits in eight innings pitched. Cardenas has walked just two of 25 batters faced while striking out nine and holding opponents to a .080 batting average.


The Mountaineers started the season with a 3-4 record and this weekend's series against the Herd will be Appalachian State's first at home.

--Kendall McGowan has a team-high batting average of .333 with four RBIs and four runs.

--Alex Leshock and Bailey Welch are tied with a team-high two stolen bases each.

--Four different batters have hit home runs for the Mountaineers this year: McGowan, Drew Beck, Conner Leonard, and CJ Brown.

--Jason Avers leads the team with 8 RBIs.

--Vaccacio and Schmid are tied for most strikeouts with 12 each.
