SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - Marshall men's and women's golf individuals Alex Weiss and Kerri Parks picked up runner-up honors in the final round of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate at the Sevierville Golf Club.
The award is the second consecutive time Weiss has finished a tournament as a runner-up, while Parks is receiving her first individual trophy this season.
Weiss finished the tournament with a final score of 10-under 206, while he finished round three with a 3-under 69. The senior's tournament was highlighted with 13 birdies, which was third among all participants, finishing all par 5s with a final score of 8-under, which led all participants, scoring an overall score of 5-under on all par 4s and making one eagle.
"Alex continued his great play," head coach Matt Grobe said. "He is having a great season. As a team, we continue to get better. We are hitting a lot of good shots and I really like how hard the guys are playing. We are heading to Greenville, S.C., today and will start preparing for the Furman Intercollegiate.
Team-wise, the Thundering Herd finished fourth and with a final score of 6-over 870. Finishing behind Weiss for MU was Cameron Root, who jumped up five spots in the final day to secure a tie for 27th after finishing with a final score of 220 and 4-over.
Finishing above Weiss was Carson-Newman's Tom Forster, who scored a 13-under 203. Among the teams, Eastern Kentucky edged out Carson-Newman by one stroke and a score of 850.
Parks helped lead the women's golf team to a finish at second place after posting a final score of 8-over 221. The freshman collected 35 pars and seven birdies, while she finished even-for-par on par 3s and par 5s.
The Herd earned its second place spot with a final score of 913 and 61-over, which was edged out by Jacksonville State by 11 strokes. The Gamecocks' Valentina Giraldo finished ahead of Parks with a score of 3-under 210.
"We came up short today and didn't play our best as a team," head coach Brooke Burkhammer said. "I am extremely proud of Kerri for continuing to post some great rounds for us. She has really matured this semester. I'm excited for her and now we will prepare for the next event."
Junior golfer Ylva Forslund earned a spot in a tie for 11th after posting a score of 15-over 228. Forslund's score of 4-over on Par 4s was second among all golfers.
Up next, the men's golf team will participate in the Furman Intercollegiate on March 23-25 and the women's golf team will play in the Brickyard Collegiate on April 8-10.
