NORFOLK, Va. - Four singles wins propelled fourth seed Florida Atlantic past the 13th seed Marshall women's tennis team in the opening round of the Conference USA tournament Thursday afternoon. The Herd ends its season with a 3-20 record following the 4-2 loss to the Owls.
The Herd made a late push to secure the doubles point. Anna Smith and Marija Bogicevic won their tenth match when paired together, earning a 6-2 decision at the No. 2 spot. Stephanie Smith and Maddie Silver were defeated at the No. 1 spot, 6-2. Brooke Lashway and Ana Marhuenda rallied from being down 0-5 to win in a tiebreaker, 7-6, clinching the doubles point for Marshall.
Anna Smith was the lone member of the Herd to win a singles match. The Herd put itself in a quick hole with three consecutive losses, as Stephanie Smith (6-2, 6-2), Silver (6-0, 6-4) and Lashway all were defeated in straight sets. Anna Smith got the Herd within a point at 3-2 with a 6-2, 6-3 win, her 11th singles win of the season. Bogicevic was defeated in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, to clinch the match for the Owls. Marhuenda was up a set in the remaining match that went unfinished.
Florida Atlantic moves on to the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championship, where it will face either Middle Tennessee or UTSA. Marshall's season comes to a close following the loss.
