HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 2 Marshall University men's soccer team (6-0) blanked the Cleveland State Vikings (1-4-1, 0-1-0 Horizon), 5-0, for its fourth shutout of the season on Tuesday.
"It was a good performance," Herd men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie said after the win. "I thought in the first half, we weren't as patient as we needed to be. In the second half, we came out, we solved the problems. Cleveland State helped us a little bit. They tried to press a little bit more to get back in the game. They opened up bigger spaces. Our patience plus the bigger spaces paid off."
Marco Silva tallied a pair of goals; Matthew Bell had a goal and an assist with Aymane Sordo registering a pair of assists as the trio each had multi-point efforts.
"It was great for us," Silva said about the team's 6-0 start before beginning conference play. "We have a tough conference and so it's good to keep that momentum."
Bell and Silva combined for their three goals in a span of just under 23 minutes. Bell found the ball at his feet off a deflection off a Viking defender and fired it into the back of the goal with his left foot at the 47:58 mark to put MU up 2-0. The native of Kingston, Jamaica, is on a three-game point streak and has now tallied a point in five of the team's six games.
Silva tallied the Herd's third and fourth goals of the contest in the 63rd and 71st minutes, respectively. The first came off a pass from Bell as Silva turned and fired it past the keeper.
"It was a pass," Bell said about the pass he fired into Silva's feet with a grin on his face. "We have a connection. I know where he is all the time. I saw him with space in the box."
The second came off a Taimu Okiyoshi through ball that sent the sophomore on a breakaway. Silva now has a Sun Belt leading seven goals this season.
"I'm seeing the space in behind and they're doing the rest for me," Silva said about getting in behind the defense and scoring.
The first half didn't see much action before Sordo found Pablo Simon with a cross that Simon snuck past the CSU keeper in the 38th minute for the eventual game-winning goal.
Sordo also assisted on the final goal of the match in the 89th minute as he sent Alexander Adjetey on goal with a through ball with Adjetey converting the chance for his first goal of the season.
Gabriel Perrotta and Gabe Sitler combined for the shutout in goal for the Herd. Perrotta has 3.5 shutouts through the first six matches.
