Albert "Albie" DeYoung
- Induction:
- 2014
- Class:
- 1978
Unquestionably one of the greatest pitchers in Marshall history, Albie DeYoung led the 1978 Marshall baseball team to within one win of the College World Series. That season’s Thundering Herd rose to a school-best No. 14 national ranking and won the Southern Conference championship and an NCAA Regional Tournament berth in Coral Gables, Fla. There, DeYoung beat Florida State 4-0 and Marshall also recorded a win over Clemson before falling twice to Miami, which advanced to Omaha. DeYoung still ranks high in the Marshall record book in career wins (19), earned run average (2.67) and strikeouts (196). After completing his Marshall career, he returned to teach and coach baseball in his native Wayne, N.J. DeYoung was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.
