Marshall fielded its first men’s soccer team in the fall of 1979, but it wasn’t until 1981 that the Thundering Herd awarded its first scholarship, which went to Scott Jackson of Nitro, W.Va. The Thundering Herd’s confidence in the defensive standout was well-served as he went on to win second team All-Southern Conference honors as a freshman and would go on to twice receive first team all-league accolades. As the all-conference sweeper in 1982, Jackson helped Marshall to a 13-6 record, establishing a school record for wins that would stand for 18 years. A magna cum laude student at Marshall, Jackson would go on to law school at the University of North Carolina and a career as an attorney in Greensboro, N.C. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.
