While it would be very unusual for Marshall to pass for fewer than 2,000 yards in a season these days, the first Thundering Herd QB to reach that mark was Carl Fodor in 1984. Recruited to Marshall by Coach Sonny Randle after receiving West Virginia All-State honors as a senior at Weir High School, the Weirton native blossomed as a junior when Coach Stan Parrish implemented a wide-open passing attack. The previous single-season passing records were 1,620 yards and 13 touchdowns by Ted Shoebridge in 1969, and Fodor threw for 2,888 yards and 22 scores as he led the 1984 team to a 6-5 record, Marsall’s first winning season in 20 years. The following spring, Fodor was named winner of the Hardman Award as the top amateur athlete in West Virginia. As a senior Fodor again passed for more than 2,000 yards and led the Thundering Herd to a 7-3-1 record, and when his career was complete he was the school’s record holder in passes attempted (1,059), passes completed (521), passing yards (6,655) and touchdown passes (39). Following his Marshall career, Fodor played two seasons for the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.
