- Induction:
- 2001
- Class:
- 1978
When Marshall University moved into the Southern Conference in 1977, the Thundering Herd swimming team was poised to compete for titles immediately and a big reason for that was Dana St. Claire. The Miami, Fla., native became a five-time Southern Conference champion and an eight-time finalist in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events at the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships. St. Claire also became Marshall’s first Southern Conference individual champion and set school records in two individual and three relay events. His records in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke at the 1977 Southern Conference Championships made him Marshall’s first individual champion in the Herd’s new league. St. Claire helped Marshall win the league championship as a senior in 1978 and then as a graduate assistant coach the next two years as Marshall continued what would eventually become a string of five straight league crowns. St. Claire was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.
