Marshall University Athletics
Marshall Athletics Hall of Fame

Earl Wellman
- Induction:
- 1993
- Class:
- 1935
If Marshall was playing ball between 1932 and 1936, Earl Wellman was on the field or court. The burly 5-foot-11, 180-pound fullback was a four-time letter winner in football for coaches Tom Dandelet and Cam Henderson, helped Legs Hawley’s baseball team win three consecutive Buckeye Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles in 1933, 1934 and 1935, and also suited up for three seasons with the basketball team, where Cam Henderson named him team captain in 1935-36 and then, for a time, an assistant coach. After he finished his Marshall playing career, Wellman signed with the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization and played the outfield for the hometown Huntington Red Birds as a teammate of future Baseball Hall of Famer Walter Alston. Wellman was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.
