Ed Ulinski paved the way for some of the most powerful offenses in Marshall history, and then did the same for the Cleveland Browns. Recruited to Marshall by Coach Cam Henderson out of Ambridge High School in Pennsylvania, Ulinski set the tone with his physical play as a two-way end and blocking back for Marshall teams that went a combined 24-5 in three seasons from 1939-41. As a junior in 1940, Ulinski helped the team to an 8-2 campaign during which it outscored the opposition over the last five games by a combined 258-12 margin as Jackie Hunt set an NCAA record by scoring 27 touchdowns, and Marshall the nation in scoring with an average of 33.4 points per game. As a senior captain in 1941, he led the team to a 7-1 record that included a 16-6 win over Wake Forest at Fairfield Stadium, and Ulinski received honorable mention honors on the Associated Press Little All-America Team.
