- Induction:
- 2015
- Class:
- 1945
Jim Glass was recruited to play basketball at Marshall by Cam Henderson out of Talcott, W.Va., during a time when a large number of the male students at Marshall had been called away to military service during World War II. A versatile player who was listed at times as a guard, forward and center during his Thundering Herd career, Glass scored 22 points to help Henderson’s Herd beat Cincinnati 55-49 during a sophomore season in which he filled a part-time role on the team. He became a full-time starter and team captain as a junior, helping Marshall to 15-7 and 17-9 records as the war came to a close. During his junior season Glass scored 23 points in a 119-55 win over Salem College, the first time the Marshall basketball team eclipsed the 100-point mark in a game. After graduating from Marshall, Glass became the basketball and football coach at Leewood Junior High School in Kanawha County. He died of a heart attack while attending the Marshall football homecoming game in 1971, the day the Young Thundering Herd defeated a highly favored Bowling Green team for its second win of the year. Glass was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.
