Jermaine Swafford made his mark on the Marshall football team even before he actually played in games, when as a redshirt in the 1992 national championship season he was honored with the team’s J.D. Coffman Award as the Scout Team Player of the Year. That was just the beginning for the Soddy Daisy, Tenn., native who won another national championship ring as an All-America linebacker for the Thundering Herd’s undefeated 1996 NCAA Division I-AA champion. A two-time All-Southern Conference selection, Swafford helped Marshall to a 62-12 record during his five years on campus, including that redshirt season. He was also a member of the Marshall track and field team, winning the Southern Conference discus championship and taking all-league honors in 1994. Swafford was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.
