The winningest coach in the history of Marshall women’s basketball, Judy Southard led the Thundering Herd to a 178-130 record (.578) over 11 seasons from 1981-92. From 1985-89, Southard led Marshall to five consecutive Southern Conference regular-season titles and was a three-time pick as the Southern Conference Coach of the Year (1986, ‘87, ‘91). Southard, who came to Marshall after three years as the head coach at Tennessee-Martin, and also served as an assistant athletic director and Marshall’s senior women’s administrator. She left Marshall to move into a career in administration as the athletic director at Texas Woman’s University and then senior associate athletic director at Louisiana State University, where she also served as chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee. Southard was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.
