As Marshall dominated the Southern Conference with four consecutive men’s swimming championships from 1977-81, Mark Sheridan was always heavily involved in the Thundering Herd’s success. As a sophomore, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native won the 1,650-yard freestyle and placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle event. As a junior, Sheridan won the 500-yard freestyle and placed second to teammate Glenn Hartway in the 1,650-yard freestyle. As a senior team captain, Sheridan led Marshall to another championship and won the Southern Conference Academic Medal. A regular on the Marshall Dean’s List, Sheridan served in the U.S. Army after graduation and then returned to Marshall to attend medical school, where he became an otolaryngologist. His brother, Jim, also swam at Marshall and is a fellow Hall of Fame member. Sheridan was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.
