Mike Horan batted .311 as a freshman in 1974 and kept right on hitting for Coach Jack Cook’s Thundering Herd, turning in one of the best seasons in school history when he hit .408 as a sophomore. Among Horan’s 40 base hits (in 98 at bats) that season were four doubles, three triples and three home runs as he scored 36 runs and drove in 25 more. The Hawthorne, New Jersey, native and Herd shortstop helped the team to an 83-59 record in his four seasons of play and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1976. Horan was named an Academic All-American in 1975. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
