In the late 1960s, the Marshall baseball team knew it always had a chance when Paul Holley climbed onto the mound. In his three seasons as a pitcher on the Marshall varsity for Coach Jack Cook, Holley led the Thundering Herd in starts, innings pitched, wins and strikeouts. As a sophomore in 1967, Holley went 4-4 with a 2.05 earned run average. The next season, Holley helped the team to not only its first winning record of the decade at 18-7, but that wins total established a school record as Holley logged a 5-3 mark. As a senior in 1969, Holley pitched four complete games and went 3-2 with a stingy 1.82 earned run average as the Marshall team set a school standard with a team ERA of 2.75. That season Holley was honored by the Mid-American Conference as the first-team pitcher in all-league voting. For his career, Holley had a 12-9 record with a 2.64 ERA and 155 strikeouts in 170 1/3 innings of work. Holley was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995.
