  • Class:
    1962
One of the stars of the Marshall golf team that registered the best NCAA Tournament performance in school history, H.L. “Pete” Byer III won third team All-American status as he led the Thundering Herd to a No. 11 finish at the 1962 NCAA Championships at the Duke Golf Club in Durham, N.C. The son of Greenbrier professional Pete Byer Jr., the younger Byer received All-MAC honors all three seasons that he played for the Herd and Coach Whitey Wilson, winning the Mid-American Conference Tournament as a junior in 1961 at the Bowling Green Country Club in Ohio and then again in 1962 as he tied for top honors with teammate Jim Ward at the Meadowview Country Club in Kent, Ohio. Byer and Ward each posted totals of 5-under-par 133 for the event, while teammate Harry Hoffer finished next at 134 and Marshall won its first MAC team championship by two strokes over Ohio University, the only time between 1957 and 1965 that Ohio did not win the league title. Byer was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986.
