Richard Watts made the short jog from Huntington East High School to Marshall University, and by the time he concluded his Thundering Herd career he had also run to 18 school records, several meet championships and All-Southern Conference honors. Among Watts’ titles were Marshall Invitational cross country meet championships as a junior and senior in 1975 and ‘76. His athletic prowess continued well after Watts’ Marshall years were over – he won three Virginia State Mountain Bike Masters championships from 2000-03 and has finished high in national and world mountain bike championships as well. Watts was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.
