Already a legendary athlete in the state of West Virginia when he became Marshall’s athletic director in 1926, Roy “Legs” Hawley changed the face of Marshall athletics during his decade in that role. Among the school’s advances under the leadership of the Bluefield, W.Va., native were oversight of the construction of Fairfield Stadium, arranging for Marshall sports to be broadcast on fledgling Huntington radio station WSAZ (930 AM) in 1927, and moving the school from the WVIAC into the Buckeye Conference in 1933. Hawley also served as Marshall’s baseball coach, leading his team to three consecutive Buckeye titles in 1933, ‘34 and ‘35 with a combined record of 30-5 over that span. Hawley was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011 and also is a member of the West Virginia University, National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors and West Virginia Sports halls of fame.
