Men's Basketball Opens Season with Exhibtion Game Monday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University?s men?s basketball team will open the 2001-2002 season with an exhibition game against Worldwide Basketball?s Kentucky Cats Monday, November 5 in the Cam Henderson Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Worldwide?s ?Kentucky Cats? features a strong contingent of former collegiate stars. Among them are former University of Cincinnati star Melvin Levitt (6?3?, guard), Xavier standout Gary Lumpkin (6-1, guard), Tulsa?s Dave Shelton (6?6?, forward), UC?s Damon Flint (6?5?, forward) and Wisconsin?s Sean Daugherty (6?10?, center). Monday?s game will be the squad?s first test.
Marshall returns three starters from last year?s squad that finished the year with a record of 18-9. Tamar Slay, J.R. VanHoose, and Latece Williams will be looked upon to provide leadership to a squad that features six newcomers. Slay, a six-foot-nine shooting guard, averaged more than 17 points per game last year, while VanHoose (6-10, center) averaged 16.6 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. Williams (6-8, forward) averaged 10.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, and led the team with 48 blocks.
Prior to the game, fans will have an opportunity to buy season tickets and get a chance at winning a prize package with Marshall?s final ?Choose Your Seat? event. From 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. fans can take their pick of available seats and enter to win any of four prizes (Two skybox tickets to the November 17th game with Ohio/Dinner for two at the Marshall Hall of Fame Cafe/A dozen roses from Archie?s Flowers/Autographed basketball from coach Greg White).
Single game tickets to all Thundering Herd home games this season range from $5 to $18 and can be purchased by calling the Marshall ticket office at 1-800-THE-HERD. Marshall?s regular season home opener is slated for November 23, against Troy State. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Cam Henderson Center.
