Herd Places 15 On All-MAC Football Squad

CLEVELAND, Ohio ? Mid-American Conference East Division champion Marshall led the way today as the league announced its 2001 All-Conference football squad.

Marshall (10-1) placed 15 players on the All-MAC squad, which was eight more than the Toledo, Western Michigan and Northern Illinois, which had seven players each on the squad.

The Herd placed six players on the first team offensive unit, led by junior quarterback Byron Leftwich. He was joined by a trio of his favorite targets, wideouts Darius Watts and Josh Davis and tight end Gregg Kellett. A pair of Herd linemen, Steve Sciullo and Nate McPeek also made the first team. Of the six players, only Kellett is a senior.

On the defensive side, Marshall placed three players on the first team. senior linebacker Max Yates was selected for the second straight year and he was joined by senior defensive end Ralph Street and junior safety Chris Crocker.

The second team offense featured three more Marshall players -- junior lineman Steve Perretta, junior receiver Denero Marriott and sophomore running back Franklin Wallace. The second team defense featured Marshall senior linebacker Sam Goines, junior defensive tackle Orlando Washington and junior punter Curtis Head.

The MAC will continue to announce post-season awards tomorrow with the selection of the Freshman of the Year and Special Teams Player of the Year. On Wednesday the Defensive and Offensive Players of the Year will be announced. The MAC Coach of the Year and the Vern Smith Leadership Award winner will be announced on Thursday at the Vern Smith Luncheon at the Radisson Hotel Toledo.
