Ronald Blackshear Leads Marshall Past UMass, 81-66

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Ronald Blackshear scored 26 points, hitting five of 10 shots from behind the three-point arc, to lead Marshall University to a 81-66 victory over the University of Massachusetts in men?s college basketball action Saturday.
?It was a good hard fought win,? Marshall Head Coach Greg White said. ?This gives us tremendous momentum heading into our game with Kent State. I could not be more pleased.?
Blackshear, a sophomore transfer from Temple, paced the Thundering Herd attack. The six-foot-five shooting guard hit seven of 15 shots from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds in only his second game with Marshall.
?Ronald Blackshear played a great game tonight,? White said. ?He did what he does (scores points).?
Marshall (7-4) also got strong performances from Tamar Slay, J.R. VanHoose, and Latece Williams. Slay hit for 15 points and grabbed six rebounds. VanHoose hit for 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Williams scored 14 points and grabbed six boards.
UMass (6-4) was led by Shannon Crooks? 15 points. Eric Williams added 14 and Micah Brand 12 for the Minutemen. Brand also pulled down 11 rebounds.
Marshall shot 48% (26-54) from the field, while limiting the Minutemen to 41% (25-61). UMass managed to hold a 40 to 37 edge in rebounding and Marshall won the turnover battle, committing only 12 to UMass? 16.
The Thundering Herd will return to action Saturday, January 5th when Kent State visits Huntington for a Mid-American Conference East Division contest. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. and the game will not be televised.
