1/12/2004

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Marshall men's basketball team dropped an 88-65 decision to the MAC West Division leading Western Michigan Broncos Monday night at University Arena. Marshall falls to 5-6, 2-2 in the Mid-American Conference, while the Broncos claimed their ninth straight game, improving to 10-1, 4-0 in league action.

The Herd took a 25-24 lead at the 7:54 mark in the first half, and looked to be in position to make a run at the Broncos. Leading up to that point, WMU had pushed their lead to seven in the early going. A 9-0 run gave Marshall the 25-24 advantage, but Western Michigan immediately responded, scoring 21 of the game's next 24 points to break open the game. The Broncos took a 49-32 lead into the halftime break.

The second half was more of the same, as the Broncos maintained a 20-point margin the rest of the way.

Marvin Black (Cleveland, Ohio) led the Thundering Herd with 11 points, all of which came in the first half. He left the game with four minutes to go in the first half with a sternum injury and never returned. A.W. Hamilton (Georgetown, Ky.) was the only other Marshall player in double-figures with ten points.

Western Michigan had four players in double-figures, including a game-high 22 points by Mike Williams. Center Anthony Kann scored 12 while Reggie Berry tallied 11 points. Bronco guard Ben Reed, who had averaged 27 points in his last three games entering the contest, was held to 14 points.

Marshall returns to action Wednesday night at Toledo. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
