OXFORD, Ohio ? Marshall travels to Oxford, Ohio, to take on the Miami RedHawks Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in an all-important Mid-American Conference basketball game. The game can be seen live on the Thundering Herd/ISP television network.
The game looms large for the Herd when it comes to hosting a MAC First Round home game in the Henderson Center. Marshall can host a game if: 1) they defeat Miami; 2) Buffalo beats Akron; 3) Western Michigan defeats Northern Illinois; 4) Ohio defeats Kent State. If any of those four things happen, the Herd will be at home on Monday evening. Interestingly enough, Marshall will know if the Miami game is a must-win before tip-off at 4 p.m. ? Buffalo/Akron and Kent State/Ohio both tip at noon, and the Broncos tussle with the Huskies at 2 p.m. in Kalmazoo.
Saturday?s contest also has impact on the RedHawks, who will draw a first-round bye as the #3 seed with a victory over Marshall. If Miami loses to the Herd, Toledo will take the #3 seed, and the RedHawks will have to play a first round game at Millett Hall.
Miami enters their final regular season contest of the 2003-04 campaign with a 16-11 overall record, 11-6 in the Mid-American Conference. Senior Juby Johnson leads the RedHawks in scoring, averaging 16.7 points per contest. Juniors Chet Mason and Danny Horace also average double-digits at 10.1 points per game. With a win over the Herd Saturday, Miami will garner the #3 seed and a first round bye in the MAC Tournament.
The Herd enters the game with an 11-15 record, 8-9 in the conference, and the winners of two in a row. In its last game against Akron, The Herd knocked off Akron, 78-68, at the Henderson Center Wednesday night. Trailing by two at the half, 36-34, the Herd used a 20-4 spurt in the second half to come away with the victory. Marvin Black led the Herd with 23 points and nine rebounds, while David Anderson (13), Enoch Bunch (11), and A.W. Hamilton (10) each scored in double-figures in the winning effort.
Miami leads the all-time series against Marshall, 45-27, including a 25-10 record in Oxford and a 9-2 record at Millett Hall. Marshall?s last win in Oxford came in 2000, when the Herd defeated the RedHawks, 87-78. Since Marshall rejoined the MAC, the Herd is 1-5 against Miami at Millett Hall. The first meeting between the two schools came in 1933, when Marshall won 34-22 in Huntington.
The game will be shown live on the Thundering Herd/ISP Television Network locally in Huntington on WSAZ-TV and in Toledo on WB-TV5 in Toledo, Ohio. Satellite coordinates for the game are AMC 9 Transponder 15K.
