HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Morris Almond scored 36 points and Lorenzo Williams scored seven of his 15 points in overtime as Rice beat Marshall 78-75 on Wednesday.

Mark Patton had 26 points and nine rebounds to lead Marshall (9-12, 2-6 CUSA) while Markel Humphrey scored 14.

Marshall pushed the game into overtime by overcoming a seven-point deficit in the final 1:22, led by a pair of Tre Whitted 3-pointers.

Whitted, who scored all 11 of his points in the second half, hit a 26-foot bomb to pull Marshall within three, then Patton stole the inbound pass and scored to cut the lead to 65-64.

Following a Rice free throw, Patton scored on a layup to tie the game.

Almond, who also led Rice (10-11, 4-4) with 10 rebounds, took the ball and drove to the basket for a layup and foul to put the game away. With Rice up three with less than five seconds remaining, coach Willis Wilson called for a foul.

Wilson's plan backfired as Chris Ross hit the first free throw and intentionally missed the second. LaVar Carter laid the ball in to tie the score. Marshall had a chance to win after forcing a traveling violation, but Whitted's 3-point attempt bounced off as time expired.

Almond's performance was his second straight 30-plus point game. He scored 30 points in Rice's 84-79 loss to No. 3 Memphis Saturday. Marshall plays Memphis at home on Saturday.
