BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB guard Paul Delaney III scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Blazers past the Thundering Herd, 70-57, in Conference USA action Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena.

UAB improves to 15-13, 7-7 in Conference USA, while Marshall drops to 11-17, 6-8 in league action.

Sophomore forward Markel Humphrey (Ellenwood, Ga.) scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Herd on the night, his third double-double in four games. Mark Dorris (Cincinnati, Ohio) also scored in double-digits with 15 points.

The Herd fell victim to a poor shooting night, and never led in the game. Marshall shot 29.3% from the floor (17-58) and only 20.0% from three (5-25). Meanwhile, UAB fired in 47.9% from the field (23-48), including 53.8% (14-26) in the first half. MU did outrebound the Blazers, 46-27.

UAB opened the game on a 10-3 run and never looked back. The Herd trimmed the Blazer lead to three in the first half on two occasions, but never got any closer. UAB extended its lead to 14 with 3:51 to go in the first half, and Marshall never got closer than eight points for the rest of the contest.

Besides Delaney, Frank Holmes (14), Wen Mukubu (14), and Maurice Gibbs (10) also scored in double figures for the Blazers.

Marshall returns home for its final home game of the season against Rice on Wednesday night. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. EST, and the game can be seen live on CSTV.
