HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University men's soccer defeated Florida International Wednesday at Sam Hood Field by a final of 3-2.
The Thundering Herd (1-10-1, 1-3) picks up its first win of the 2008 season when junior Michael Bolt (Hendersonville, Tenn.) scored with just over a minute and a half remaining in the contest.
Marshall took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a heads-up play by senior Kolby LaCrone (Zanesville, Ohio) who played a rebound off his chest and into the Golden Panther goal.
FIU (2-8-2, 1-3) would tie the game in the second half when Steven Cabas scored off a cross from Chris Caporaletti.
The tie would only stick for eight minutes before the Herd got another goal from junior Dustin Dawes (Nashville, Tenn.). Dawes was able to score on a header delivered from Bolt which gave him his four goal of the season.
The Panthers would respond in the 72nd minute when Juan Guerra would be granted a penalty kick and converted to tie the game at 2-2.
With just under two minutes to play in the game that seemed to be heading to overtime, it would be Bolt's goal that would put Marshall up for good to secure the victory.
The Herd finished the game with 11 shots on goal including four from LaCrone and two from Dawes.
For FIU, goalkeeper Jesse Fullerton would take the loss but finished with eight saves while senior Greg Walter (Slipper Rock, Pa.) would pick up his first win for Marshall with four saves.
Up next for the Herd will be a C-USA road match against SMU. The game is scheduled for Sunday Oct. 19 started at 8 p.m. EST.
