Late Goal Lifts Tulsa Past Marshall 2-1

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - A Tom Jackson goal in the 72nd minute looked as if it would send the game to overtime, but a late strike from Tulsa's Kilian Poeschk in the 86th minute gave the Golden Hurricane a 2-1 win over the Marshall University men's soccer team on Sunday night at Sam Hood Field.
The loss drops MU to 8-6-1 overall and 4-2-0 in Conference USA action. No. 12 Tulsa improves to 9-4-2 and 4-1-1 in conference. The Herd sits in third place in the C-USA standings with 12 points, while Tulsa and UAB is ahead of Marshall with 13 points.
The Thundering Herd trailed Tulsa 1-0 at halftime after a Jose Parada goal in the 10th minute. The Golden Hurricane outshot Marshall 13-6 in half one.
"After the first 15 or 20 minutes I thought it was going to be a long night," head coach Bob Gray said. "We gave them too much respect, but then we changed our philosophy and had some of our best scoring opportunities of the year."
MU came out firing in the second half, and just missed the equalizing goal numerous times. But a cross from Dustin Dawes with time ticking away found Jackson who one-timed the ball out of the air to tie the game at 1-1.
However, a Tulsa counter attack with just over three minutes to go ended with Poeschk beating Marshall's goalie Daniel Withrow for the game-winner.
"We know we can play at this level," Gray said. "If Tulsa is the elite team in this conference than we are right there with them."
MU has two games remaining on its regular-season schedule. The Herd takes on South Carolina next Saturday night in Columbia at 7 p.m., and then wraps up its season at home with UAB the following weekend.
