Matt Smith Named Assistant Athletic Trainer

Huntington, W.Va. - Marshall University Head Athletic Trainer Tom Belmaggio has promoted Matt Smith to the position of assistant athletic trainer for men's basketball and outdoor track.

"Matt has a great deal of Division I athletic training experience that has prepared him for this position," Belmaggio said. "He has done a great job in his time here and he is a good fit with our men's basketball coaching staff."

Smith, a 2007 graduate of the University of Florida, has served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Marshall since 2007. During his tenure in Huntington, Smith has worked with the Thundering Herd's men's basketball, football, softball and cheerleading squads.

Prior to Marshall, Smith was a student athletic trainer at the University of Florida from 2005 to 2007. At Florida, Smith worked with several Gator athletic teams including basketball and football. He has worked several major athletic events, including the 2006 SEC Football Championship and the 2007 BCS National Championship games.

"I am excited about the opportunity to continue to grow professionally and to continue to work with our student-athletes and coaches here at Marshall," Smith said.

Smith, a certified athletic trainer and a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, graduated with honors from Florida with a bachelor's degree in athletic training in August of 2007 and is expected earn his master's degree in exercise science from Marshall in May.
