HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University Men's Basketball Coach Donnie Jones announced Saturday that Patterson School (N.C.) standout DeAndre Kane has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Thundering Herd beginning in the 2009-10 season.
"We are very excited about DeAndre," Jones said. "He is a prolific scorer that fits perfectly into our style of play. He comes from a great high school program and one of the top prep school programs in the country and we are excited about his future here at Marshall."
Kane, a 6'4", 200-pound guard, played prep basketball at the Patterson School in Lenoir, N.C., this past season where he averaged 15.6 points per game en route to leading Patterson to a 34-2 overall record and a #1 prep school national ranking.
"He's a physical wing who can score it and shoot it," Patterson Head Coach Chris Chaney said. "He's got a good understanding of the game and he defends. He's a tough kid and that's exactly the type of kid you win with. The bottom line is DeAndre is just a winner."
Kane, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., led Pittsburgh's Schenley High School to a State Championship as a junior and a third consecutive Pittsburgh City League Championship as a senior where he scored 35 points in the title game. As a senior, the sharp-shooting guard led all WPIAL and City League players in scoring during the regular season with 33.1 points per contest while averaging 11 rebounds per game.
Kane received scholarship offers from Pittsburgh, Marquette, Arizona, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Rhode Island, and recently had received interest from Kentucky.
